A Look Back and a Look Ahead

Happy New Year

The last day of the year is always a little bittersweet for me. Christmas is over (which means lots of decorations to put away) and I miss it a little. But I’m also filled with hope and excitement for what the new year will hold.

As I think back over this past year I am amazed at how much has happened in 2015. This year, I officially launched my online shop and started selling art prints and my new line of custom stationery. I also had the opportunity to return to my architectural roots when I was asked to create the concept design for Hotel Monsú, a proposed Hilton Curio hotel in Cartagena, Columbia. My website and branding got an update. And of course I painted some custom house portraits, which have become almost like therapy for me. Perhaps what I’m most excited about however, are my new art collections I’m developing for product licensing. More on this to come!

As I look ahead, 2016 will be my tenth year in business. When I first started out, I exclusively focused on architectural renderings. Over the last decade, as the industry has evolved, I’ve expanded into custom illustration, fine art, and art licensing. As with any business, there have been challenges as well as blessings. But I think change keeps us fresh, struggles keep us hungry, and success keeps us motivated.

Owning my own business has been a dream of mine since I was little. In those days, my sister and I would play store or restaurant in our play room under our giant, metal craft table and I would imagine what it would be like in “real life.” There was just something alluring about the challenge–and the freedom–of working for myself. As I got older and became more aware of my artistic leanings, I started to envision a career where I could create beautiful things for a living, and in so doing, bring a little joy to people’s lives. What I didn’t realize was how much joy it would bring to mine.

I think change keeps us fresh, struggles keep us hungry, and success keeps us motivated.

It’s my belief that art is for everyone, not only for collectors. What we choose to surround ourselves with has a profound impact on our outlook and how we live. It’s my hope that the pieces I create will bring you inspiration. That’s what excites me most about the creative process. These days, I can’t wait to get up in the morning and put brush to paper. I relish the almost nervous energy of ideas that can’t wait to get out. I love seeing “that color” that forms the basis for a new piece, and the feeling I get when new art supplies arrive in the mail never gets old.

I’ve learned to appreciate the excitement of starting a new project as well as the satisfaction of finishing one. I don’t typically do New Year’s resolutions, but I suppose if I were to pick one it would be to enjoy the process as well as the final product.

I am truly thankful for each of my clients and customers, because without you none of this would be possible. I’m thankful for supportive friends and family, for a very encouraging husband, and for my two little collaborators who give honest critiques and are willing to share their mommy with her computer and paint brushes.

I would love to hear from you–how do you live with art, and what inspires you? Be sure to sign up to follow my blog for news and updates and have a very Happy New Year!
