My Story

a-little-about-me

Hello and welcome! My name is Melissa, and I am an artist and designer who creates surface designs and illustrations for products. My vision is to bring beauty and style into everyday life through my work.

My love of art and all things beautiful started at an early age. As a child, I enjoyed drawing and painting the world as I saw it. Eventually I knew that I wanted to pursue an art-related career, and I was drawn to the more “practical” applications of art. I had a passion for décor and architecture so I decided on interior design at Florida State. In design, I was able to integrate artistic skill with business application. I also had the life-changing opportunity to study art and design in Paris, London, and Milan. It was here that art came alive for me and I understood the value of artistic beauty in everyday life.

My first real design job was in a fabric and wallpaper shop where I fell in love with pattern and color. I went on to work for a residential home builder helping clients design their new homes. I also worked at a furniture store in sales and visual merchandising. My time as a designer gave me invaluable experience in working with customers, learning what they like and what they need. I had the chance to see what goes into the design of great products that not only sell well, but have value and functionality.

As much as I enjoyed interior design, I realized that what I loved most was creating art. I had always dreamed of owning my own business. So I started off small, first doing architectural rendering, then branching out into magazine illustration, fine art, advertising, and finally product design.

I received a few requests to license my illustrations and I decided to start creating my own collections of surface patterns for product design. I use a combination of traditional and digital media. I credit my formal design training for impressing upon me the importance of the elements and principles of design. In order to create aesthetically pleasing, in-demand designs, I feel it’s vital for my process to be classically grounded yet complimented with my interpretation of current trends.

Over the last 13 years, I’ve had the honor of working with amazing clients around the world in a variety of industries. While this has allowed me the unique opportunity of gaining valuable insight into what resonates with consumers, it has also given me depth as an artist and designer. The happy result is a curated portfolio favoring painterly details, delicate color palettes, and sophisticated motifs. After years of drawing primarily architectural subjects, I discovered the absolute joy of painting botanicals. There is nothing I enjoy more than sitting outdoors and studying the simple beauty of a flower and capturing its colors and subtleties on canvas.

I believe there is extraordinary beauty in the everyday, and my inspiration most often comes from my surroundings–the outdoors, my garden…and of course I will always be influenced by my travels in Europe, South America, and right here at home in the U.S. I developed my brand with the desire to produce elegant yet approachable designs that people can enjoy every day–from fabrics, fashion, and stationery, to home furnishings, wallpaper, and décor. It’s art you can live in! I’m driven by the idea that beautiful art is for everyone, and I believe that whatever people choose to surround themselves with has a profound impact on their outlook and way of life. It’s my hope that the artwork I create will bring others joy and add value to their everyday lives.

I live in Tallahassee, Florida with my husband and two children. When I’m not creating art in my studio, spending time with my family, or researching my next collection, I’m dreaming of the faraway places I still want to visit. Please contact me if you would like more information on licensing my art, and thank you for your interest in my work!
